Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana

What is Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana

The Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) is a credit-linked subsidy scheme initiated by the Modi Government to provide affordable housing to low- and moderate-income residents nationwide. The scheme aims to construct 20 million affordable houses by March 2022, with a focus on individuals from economically weaker sections (EWS), lower-income groups (LIG), and middle-income groups (MIG) in urban and rural areas.

PMAY provides financial assistance through credit-linked subsidies, making homeownership more feasible for the targeted beneficiaries. Additionally, unlike previous schemes, PMAY mandates that the female head of the family be the owner or co-owner of the house, empowering ownership among women.

The size of houses for EWS can be up to 30 square meters (carpet area), with the flexibility for states and union territories to enhance it at their discretion. This flexibility ensures that the scheme can adapt to the unique needs and circumstances of different regions, providing reassurance and accommodation to all.

Regarding infrastructure, the state has completed over 1.73 lakh houses under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Urban) and over 16.15 lakh houses under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Gramin). The railway budget allocation for Rajasthan has increased to Rs. 9,532 crores for the Financial Year 2022-23, with 2322 km length commissioned during 2014-22.
